Town reputation attract sex workers

TOWN'S IMAGE, REPUTATION AND IDENTITY

Description:

Participants felt Swindon is "known" for street sex work, and it attracts female sex workers from other areas because of Manchester Road's proximity to the train and bus stations. They reported that women and men congregate on Manchester Road for street sex work as it is busy in the evenings, meaning there is more money to be made there from sex work. They were surprised that local communities do not report sex work as being an issue in this area, given that it has been prevalent there "for many years", but instead report "dodgy shops", gang crime and drug dealing as bigger issues. They questioned whether this is because there are services in place to support female sex workers and clear up used needles from alleyways.

Quotes from participants:

"I think because it’s [Manchester Road] quite a busy area in Swindon in the evenings,
"...it’s [Manchester Road] right next to the train station and the bus station... because Swindon’s very known for street sex work, other women from different areas can jump on a train and come into Swindon to work."
