Town centre’s ethnic diversity makes it vulnerable to social issues

TOWN DEMOGRAPHICS

Description:

Participants noted that Broad Green is one of the most "diversely mixed” parts of Swindon, with a large Goan community and many residents who do not speak English. As a result, they may be vulnerable to issues that may not happen elsewhere. They highlighted that Goan men tend to drink outdoors rather than at home, which creates social issues. It was also noted that night-time working is common place in Broad Green. This can make this area busy during the early hours of the morning and attracts people into the area at night.

Quotes from participants:

"It’s [Broad Green] culturally diverse... English speaking is possibly not... their first language and I wonder whether they’re vulnerable as a result and things happen there that maybe wouldn’t happen elsewhere"
