Transport links attract organised crime

Description:

Participants considered Swindon an “easy target" for drug dealing by out-of-town criminal gangs due to its good transport links, including the M4 motorway and rail links, and proximity to the Midlands, Bristol and London. The influence of this on Swindon's night-time economy was noted. It was felt that Manchester Road's proximity to Swindon's train and bus stations attracts "punters” from other cities which introduces antisocial behaviour such as drug dealing.

Quotes from participants:

"...we’ve got the M4 running through the middle of Swindon, we’ve got good train links... we’re very close to the midlands, down to Bristol, London, there’s different opportunities for organised crime groups to come into Swindon and have an influence on that nighttime economy."
