Increased police presence linked to safety fears

Source of power:

State

Space of power:

SAFETY, CRIME, POLICING AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Description:

There were mixed views about whether increased police presence at night is a positive or negative development, with some questioning the "message" increased police presence sends to people about safety in the nighttime economy. Some felt less conspicuous, non-uniformed police may be preferable. Others felt more visible police presence could help to safeguard and deter people from committing antisocial behaviour. Recent public surveys suggest residents feel the town centre is not being policed properly and that a more visible police presence would offer greater reassurance.

Quotes from participants:

"...police focus on safety and crime...is that seen as a positive or is that negative, what message does that send to people and what does it say about peoples safety in the night-time economy... what impact is it having."
