Space of power:

GAMBLING AND ALCOHOL

Description:

Participants highlighted an interplay between alcohol consumption and gambling and deep ties between the gambling and drinks industries. They noted that gambling advertisements were often linked to sporting events (e.g., encouraging people to place bets "before halftime").

Quotes from participants:

"there’s...an interactive element to both the alcohol consumption and the betting."
"...the whole corporate world of sport, it’s all wrapped up in, certainly alcohol..."
"...pubs that are now [screening] Sky Sports, these screens are also linked with encouraging people to drink more and to bet more, lay this bet before half time"
