WORK AND EMPLOYMENT

Description:

Participants perceived that as an "industrial town," with few higher education opportunities, there was a prevailing 'lad's culture' in many jobs of drinking and smoking, in and outside the workplace. Illicit drug use was alos mentioned. It was also felt that low-income families and households are more likely to be alcohol-abstinent, yet still experience the most harm from alcohol.

Quotes from participants:

"as a kind of occupation type, [manual labour jobs] may be more associated towards that culture of that kind of lads, who are...'lets sink a few pints, get down the pub'"
