Complex interventions can hinder public’s engagement with issues

GOVERNANCE, FUNDING AND VISION

Description:

Participants felt having too many guiding principles, or having guiding principles or interventions that are too complex, can be counterproductive as this hinders people's understanding of, and engagement with, the issue (as interventions "frame" an issue). They felt it is better to "keep it simple" and avoid adding more factors to consider.

Quotes from participants:

"....there are so many guiding principles that they can just fall off the shelf, often because they’re just too complex. And people will just never get to understand the issue, so, try and keep it simple."
"...that communication with general public, how they’re [interventions] perceived... if you’ve got something that looks very complicated, how are people going to engage with that if it kind of just looks too terrifying from the outset"
