Lack of CCTV coverage and monitoring affecting perceived public safety

Source of power:

State

Space of power:

HOUSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Description:

Participants felt CCTV cameras give a sense of security but have been told that many of the CCTV cameras in Swindon town centre do not work or are unmonitored. They reported that there is open drug dealing in the middle of Swindon town centre every day, despite there being CCTV cameras “everywhere”. They felt that youths and offenders are emboldened to commit antisocial behaviour as they know there is no surveillance.

Quotes from participants:

"...if you also see signs of CCTV… on a night out or just in general I feel like ‘great, I’m being watched, people are aware of what’s going on around me’..."
