Lack of parenting skills leaves children vulnerable to exploitation and negative influences

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Description:

Participants perceived that there were a lack of parenting skills in some families. They noted that these skills are not taught in schools and perceived this is creating a generation of vulnerable young people who lack resilience or the ability to resist negative influences. It was felt that 'intergenerational abuse', education and employment are all interlinked and a whole-system approach is needed to tackle these issues at the population level. It was also felt that early intervention could make a marked change to outcomes for young people and female service users.

Quotes from participants:

"...there’s been a lack of parenting… like three, four generations down, so they don’t have the parenting skills. I’ve got one guy that I’m working with, he’s got no concept of time… he doesn’t have any structure at all, and his mum was an alcoholic so she’s not interested… it’s just a whole big mess of non-parenting, and I think there is no emphasis in schools to do things that were traditionally parenting skills"
