Cumulative impact assessments may not be effective in reducing street drinking

Source of power:

State

Space of power:

SAFETY, CRIME, POLICING AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Description:

Participants noted there is a cumulative impact assessment (CIA) in Broad Green relating to restrictions on the number of licenced premises, to reduce street drinking and antisocial behaviour (this is currently "out to consultation"). They questioned whether a CIA is beneficial and has an impact, as residents can travel to other areas of Swindon where there are no restrictions. Some noted CIAs may have more of a "cultural" impact.

Quotes from participants:

"If I lived in Broad Green and I knew that the number of premises that offered sale of alcohol was restricted, I’d think, well, 'why?' when I can go down to somewhere else and there’s no restriction."
