High levels of retail turnover perpetuating a downward spiral of Derby's centre

CITY'S IMAGE, REPUTATION AND IDENTITY

Description:

Participants noted there is a lot of retail turnover and empty shops in Derby's city centre, outside of the main shopping centre. They highlighted that charity shops and similar stores will open and close down shortly afterwards, and landlords are often not committed to making Derby's "health and vitality" and making it a "nice place". They are therefore happy to let their units for "low value uses", which perpetuates a downward spiral of the city centre.

Quotes from participants:

~ "you just end up with lots of empty shops, or they’ll be filled briefly... charity shops and things, they pop up and close down... probably a lot of businesses think there’s no point.”
~ "You get very short-term leases ultimately don’t you, particularly on the run up to Christmas or something like that where they’ll give them a six week lease or whatever, and I think it’s the low end use again."
