Fear of (knife) crime and young people, affects users of night-time economy

Source of power:

Space of power:

SAFETY, CRIME, POLICING AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Description:

Participants felt that fear of crime (knife crime in particular) impacts on people who engage with Derby's night-time economy and can mean groups of young people seen in the city centre may be wrongly assumed to be anti-social and linked to gangs. They noted that there has seemingly been a disproportionately high number of knife incidents involving young people in the city in the last few years.

Quotes from participants:

~ "It [fear of crime] impacts when people come into the night-time economy... if a group of young people are seen in the city, they can be seen as anti-social behaviour and causing issues and linked to gangs etc, when they might not be but there have been probably a disproportionate number of incidents involving young people in the city with knives in the last couple of years..."
~ “We did surveys in the last 18 months, young people… didn’t feel there was a place in the city centre for them”
~ "We’ve had some alcohol-related night crime deaths over the last few years… where, unfortunately people have lost their life… that’s related to, in my view, alcohol... Our most recent was, a knife was involved”
