Students lured into drinking in the night-time economy (after drinking at home)

Source of power:

Economic

Space of power:

GAMBLING AND ALCOHOL

Description:

Free drinks deals and the "cultural aspect" of students pressuring each other to engage in the night-time economy is problematic. Students are drinking at home before they come into town in the evenings, as they can buy cheaper alcohol at an off-licence.

Quotes from participants:

~ "It’s not necessarily free drinks initiatives but there’s the deals that go along with it and the cultural aspect of... [students] saying 'oh, I can’t afford to go out' and then their mates saying, 'don’t worry about it, I’ll buy you some drinks'... that limit… is essentially removed..."
~ "...they’re buying it [alcohol] cheap in an off licence and drinking at home and then coming into town."
