Lack of gambling education and early intervention to mitigate against young people's (online) exposure

Description:

School students have reported receiving education on topics such as substance misuse, alcohol and drugs, but relatively little on gambling. Despite this, they seem to have a "really good understanding" of gambling risks.
One participant questioned whether young people's use of e-cigarettes may be linked to their use of alcohol and other risk behaviours. They also questioned how best to do "prevention work" with young people, involving "education, awareness, support" to mitigate against their exposure to advertising and "online harm and influences" which can lead to gambling and addiction. They felt these preventive, early interventions should happen between the ages of 11 and 16, as the data suggest young people form unhealthy habits from the ages of 16 to 25 years.
Derby City Council has done "a lot of work" with girls to promote active bystanding, though participants noted that there is "more" to be done here. There is currently an active bystanding programme in schools for year six student upwards and the local university has been "quite positive" about active bystander training.Derby City Council has done "a lot of work" with girls to promote active bystanding, though participants noted that there is "more work" to be done here. Quotes from participants:

~ "…they [students] said they hear a lot, or get education around things like substance misuse and alcohol, drugs, but not really so much around gambling. Although having said that they had a really good understanding, irrespective of that… Of risks"
~ "young people issues with vapes, can that then link to alcohol and other addictions... spending more time online and seeing all the advertising, no control on alcohol drinking on public parks... online harm and influences... how are we going to do the prevention work... to make it better when they’re at the student age or the working age, etc."
~ "Education, awareness, support for young people and... how you prepare that alongside the mitigation of advertising and exposure to online harm, etc.”
~ "Prevention, early intervention, support for young people to make sure the next generation don’t go straight down that path and the stats would suggest that’s 16 to 25, so if we do work from the 11 to 16, you’re going to try and prevent... that continuing…"
~ "...we’ve done a lot of work... [with] girls… to promote active bystanding... there’s more work to do"
