Cheap off-licences, takeaway restaurants and gambling outlets located on student routes in/out of city

Source of power:

Economic

Space of power:

GAMBLING AND ALCOHOL

Description:

There are multiple cheap off-licences, lots of takeaway restaurants and several gambling outlets on the walking routes from Derby's main student residential areas to the city centre. Student nights out benefit the economy but may leave students without sufficient funds to afford essentials like food.

Quotes from participants:

~ "where we know we’ve got proximity of lots of student housing, all their routes into the city go past these sorts of outlets, so they’re on some of the main arteries in and out of the city where students would live so they’re naturally going to walk past them."
~ "...students put a lot of impact into the economy from those expenditures but then what’s the impact of it… on students and them not being able to afford something like food, drink, necessities to afford..."
~ "we’ve known of a couple of big cases, a student the semester before last gambled their entire entry of student loan in one weekend"
